Many people look
to their closets for
inspiration, but Grant
has a better idea: Raid
your accessories. Your
handbags, belts, and
jewelry are bound to
contain more colors
that excite you.
Once you’ve found
an inspiration piece,
take it to the paint
store to match it to a
chip. But don’t stop
there, says Grant.
“My general rule is
to find a pretty color,
then go a shade or
two lighter. Or ask the
clerk to lighten the
color by
5 0
percent.”

Then test out the
color. Paint large
sample swatches “by
the window, next to
trim, in the darkest
corner, in the lightest
corner,” says Grant.
Let them dry and give
them a second coat
so you can accurately
assess the color. ■
